Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discourse the essence and utility of (re)emergence theory as the starting point of understanding and interpreting organizational routines dynamics as well as to propose a conceptual framework reflecting both epistemological and methodological value as the keystone of analysing the rationale of organizational routines and the process of their emergence. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on extensive literature studies. Findings Referring to the research problem concerning the reconciliation organizational routines and the emergence phenomenon, the findings complement the insights of the dominant theoretical perspectives in organizational routine theory, providing a more comprehensive understanding of organizational dynamics by directly addressing the heretofore intractable phenomenon of emergence. In addition, it is going to be a well-justified epistemological base to operationalize routines – not only per se, but also with regard to the mechanisms enacted. Originality/value Routines change over time and the current studies results are not sufficient to understand these changes yet. Interpreting organizational routines from the emergence theory perspective reveals their soft, indeterministic, and unpredictable nature and ought to render the scholars dealing with that phenomenon interpretatively and methodologically cautious. Emergence is a priori embedded in organizational routines’ context. The considerations included in the paper are salient regarding ontological and epistemological issues as they emphasize specific thought and research directions in the field of organization study eventually. Emergence ideas may play a part in discussions of spontaneous order, particularly by implementing it to routines construct. A major issue is the role of these ideas and processes within organizational evolution.
W artykule uwaga została skoncentrowana na roli metafory – analogii w procesie wyboru metody badawczej oraz w procesie badawczym w ogóle. Nie ma możliwości ustrzec się metaforycznych porównań, kiedy staramy się zrozumieć coś nowego. Cała nauka jest oparta na metaforze. Metafory umożliwiają nowe spojrzenie na organizację i otwierają nowe możliwości. Gareth Morgan twierdzi, że metafory są ważnym narzędziem myślenia systemowego i porównywanie systemów społecznych do organizmów żywych ułatwia ich zrozumienie zarówno z punktu widzenia teorii, jak i wymiaru praktycznego [Hutchins, 1996]. W artykule podjęto analizę metafory jako ogniwa naukowego dyskursu i istotnego elementu tworzenia teorii. (abstrakt oryginalny)
Purpose This review paper identifies and compares models of inter-organizational relationship development that have evolved in qualitative studies and then proposes an original, situational framework for the evolution of inter-organizational relationships over time. Design/methodology/approach Methodologically, this paper follows a systematic approach and uses metasynthesis of prior qualitative research as a reviewing technique. Findings The analysis of prior qualitative investigations reveals the lack of consistency among authors referring to the number and specificity of phases, with no agreement about the trajectory of relationship development (its linearity, looping of phases, dynamics, start and end points). Originality/value As its main theoretical contribution, this paper offers a multipath framework covering four phases of relationship development: (1) initiation and initial development, (2) development, (3) maintenance, and (4) dissolution, with three possible subphases to each of them (active, passive, and re-activated). From the managerial perspective, the developed framework may broaden managers' understanding and awareness of the different approaches to modeling the trajectory of the inter-organizational relationship life cycle and configuration of its particular phases.
Określenia "ewolucja" i "koewolucja" są szeroko wykorzystywane w badaniach organizacji, ale rzadko zdefiniowane. Często nie wiadomo, czy odnoszą się one do pojedynczych podmiotów czy grup jednostek. Jeżeli lokuje się badania w epistemologii ewolucyjnej, to niezbędne jest właściwe posługiwanie się właściwymi kategoriami. W opracowaniu przedstawiono systematyzację nurtów badawczych i formalnych teorii ewolucyjnych oraz zasadnicze założenia mieszczące się w ewolucyjnym nurcie zarządzania. Poczynając od podstaw ewolucji organizacyjnej, wskazano na koewolucyjną perspektywę badawczą. W końcu przedstawione zostały poglądy dotyczące obiektu analizy organizacyjnej ewolucji i koewolucji.
