Siddha medicines are safe scientific system of medicines. Herbals are mostly used in siddha medicines because of its high therapeutic potential. Though herbals are considered as safe, scientific validation is needed for its standardization and its proper use. Various herbal formulations were indicated in siddha literatures for the treatment of several diseases such as Tuberculosis, Bronchial asthma, Cancer etc., One of the herbo-mineral siddha formulation which was indicated for the management of Bronchial asthma is Nagarasingadhi chooranam. FTIR and ICPOES analysis was carried to characterize this formulation. Through FTIR analysis some functional groups such as Alcohols, Amide , Amine, Alkane , Acid, Alkyl Halide, Ether, Ester were identified in "Nagarasingadhi chooranam". The presence of heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium in "Nagarasingadhi chooranam" are within the WHO permissible limits. This research work will help to carry out further molecular and clinical studies in future.
Oxidative stress has becomes a primary factor in the progression of many degenerative diseases, such as cancer, hyperlipidemia, gastric ulcer, and diabetes. Antioxidants are vital substances which possess the ability to protect body from damage caused by free radical-induced oxidative stress. Radicals and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) are formed constantly in the human body and are removed by the enzymatic and non-enzyme antioxidant defense systems. The usage of Siddha medicine has considerably increased over the past two decades and it is steadily crossing the various geographical boundaries owing to its rich antioxidant, therapeutic potential and inexpensiveness compared to conventional modern medicines and has fairly high acceptance rates because of its herbal origin and therefore its nontoxic nature. The main aim of the present investigation is to evaluate the In-vitro antioxidant potential of the novel siddha preparation Sambirani Poo Kuligai (SPK) by DPPH radical scavenging assay. The antioxidant activity of test drug sample SPK was determined using the 2,2-diphenyl 1-2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay at the concentration of 1.25 μg/ml, 2.5 μg/ml,5 μg/ml,10 μg/ml and 20 μg/ml using ascorbic acid as standard. . Results of the DPPHfree radicalscavengingassay of SPKshows the highest percentage inhibition of about 82.52%at 20µg/ml when compare to standard ascorbicacid with 89.62%. In conclusion the trial drug SPK possess significant antioxidant property which contributes to the beneficial effect oxidative stress associated disorders.
Most of the formulations in the Siddha system is very effective but they have not been standardized. Any drug should be standardized before clinical use. There are various formulations in Siddha to treat cardiovascular diseases. One among them is the poly-herbal formulation Maaradiappuku Chooranam, but it has not been validated so far. The principal intention of this current study is to regularize the drug ‘Maaradaippuku chooranam’ by physicochemical, phytochemical and biochemical evaluation through modern Analytical techniques. The organoleptic characteristics of the Chooranam are in solid form which is pale brownish in colour and soft to touch with a characteristic odour which reveals the quality of the formulation. The aflatoxin assay showed the chooranam is free of aflatoxins. The outcomes of the study for pesticide residue show no traces of pesticide residue in the chooranam. This polyherbal formulation does not contain microbial contamination and displays the existence of steroids, alkaloids, triterpenoids, phenols, tannin, saponin and sugar. The ash value is 9.5 ± 0.4%. Heavy metals like Arsenic, Lead, Mercury and Cadmium are below the detectable limit.
Siddha system is a wonderful medical system since ancient times. The medical system fully depends upon concept of the nature. Herbals are always having highly potent medicinal value without causing any adverse effects. Gowthamar chooranam is one of the best Siddha formulation indicated in Siddha literatures for the management of hepatic diseases. Though this formulation is being used in clinical practice, Scientic documentation to standardize this drug is essential nowadays. So, the Siddha formu lation Gowthamar chooranam is subjected into characterization using FTIR and SEM. The results confirmed that the presence of functional groups Amide, Phenols and alcohols, Alkanes, Aldehyde, Amine, Alkenes, Alkanes , Ester , ether, Alkyne. The resul ts of SEM analysis shows the morphological nature of the drug Gowthamar chooranam. These findings will help for further research in Gowthamar chooranam.
The present clinical study was carried out to validate the efficacy and safety of Siddha Herbo- mineral formulation ‘Kodipavala Chunnam’ in the treatment of Infective hepatitis, Drug induced hepatitis and Alcoholic hepatitis. Open clinical trial was conducted in 40 patients with these three categories of hepatitis in Arignar Anna Govt.Hospital of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy, Chennai. The trial drug Kodipavala Chunnam was administered in all the patients at the dose of 100 mg to 200 mg thrice a day with honey depending on severity. The clinical improvement shown by cases treated with Kodipavala Chunnam was more quick and significant. Before drug administration to patients it was observed that a significant increase in the levels of serum bilirubin ALT, AST, SAP, GGT and globulin. Elevated levels of these parameters are indicative of functional impairment of liver. Administration of KPC remarkably (P<0.001) restored elevated serum bilirubin ALT, AST, SAP, GGT and globulin towards normal value. Overall results revealed that out of 40 patients 10 patients had excellent relief, 26 had good relief, 3 cases showed satisfactory result and only one case showed fair response. The results clearly have shown that the Kodipavala Chunnam treatment to the jaundice therapy helped in cutting down the course of the disease and relieving jaundice earlier. There were no new or unexpected safety events noticed during the course of the treatment
