Abstract:Coping is defined by actions of self-regulation of emotions, cognitions, behaviors, and motivational orientation under stress. This study analyzed the maternal coping with hospitalization of premature and low birth weight infants at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), using the Motivational Theory of Coping. A questionnaire, a scale and an interview were applied to 25 mothers three times between birth and hospital discharge. The results showed that the mothers' first visit to the NICU had strong emotional impact; longer hospitalization periods were linked to the decrease in Delegation coping strategies. There was more Support Seeking after the hospital discharge. Multiparous mothers and those who had a job appeared to be more vulnerable to stress. Predominantly adaptive coping responses were identified, even among two mothers whose babies had died, including Self-Reliance strategies, which were mediated by religious beliefs. Keywords Enfrentamiento Materno de la Hospitalización del Bebé en Unidad de Terapia Intensiva NeonatalResumen: Enfrentamiento son las acciones de autorregulación de la emoción, de la cognición, del comportamiento y de la orientación motivacional en condiciones de estrés. Este estudio analizó el proceso de enfrentamiento materno de la hospitalización de bebés prematuros y con bajo peso internados en Unidad de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal (UTIN). Fueron aplicados un cuestionario, una escala y una entrevista a 25 madres en tres momentos, del nacimiento hasta después del alta hospitalaria. Los resultados mostraron que la primera visita materna a la UTIN tuvo gran impacto emocional. Un mayor número de días de internación se correlacionó con la disminución en la Delegación. Y tras el alta, aumentó la Búsqueda de Soporte. Madres multíparas y que trabajaban fuera de casa presentaron mayor vulnerabilidad al estrés. Predominaron respuestas adaptativas de enfrentamiento, incluso entre las dos madres cuyos bebés fallecieron, con la presencia de estrategias de Autoconfianza, mediadas por creencias religiosas.

The purposes of the study was to analyze the meanings assigned by the father to the assistance of pre-term infants in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and to discuss how these meanings influence paternal care. It is a qualitative study with an ethnographic approach, carried out in a neonatal unit in Rio de Janeiro. Twenty-two fathers whose pre-term infants were hospitalized have been interviewed. Data were collected by means of a field logbook, participative observation and semi-structured interviews. Through thematic analysis, the inferred categories were a) father-child proximity and the permanence at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: overcoming obstacles and revealing motivations, b) the inclusion of fathers in caring for pre-term children: limits and possibilities. Nurses should favor the proximity of fathers and newborns to strengthen their relationship. The intensivist care neonatal practice should include strategies to support male parenting in pre-term birth considering the perspective of gender equity.

RESUMOObjetivo: Conhecer a percepção das mães sobre as principais dificuldades na assistência a uma criança com necessidades especiais, dependente de ventilação mecânica. Métodos: Pesquisa qualitativa, desenvolvida de agosto a novembro de 2013 no Hospital Dr. Waldemar Alcântara, em Fortaleza-CE. Os informantes foram sete mães de crianças sob ventilação mecânica. A coleta de dados deu-se através de questionários sociodemográficos e questões norteadoras, das quais emergiram categorias temáticas, analisadas pela análise de conteúdo, sendo os dados discutidos pela literatura pertinente. Resultados: A média das idades maternas variou de 18 a 36 anos. Seis eram casadas ou viviam união estável. O nível de escolaridade variou de analfabeta ao segundo grau completo. A renda familiar foi de no máximo um salário mínimo. As mães mencionaram angústia e medo diante do impacto inicial do diagnóstico, com pouca compreensão da linguagem biomédica e muitos questionamentos durante todo o período após o diagnóstico e durante a internação hospitalar. Conclusão: As dificuldades envolvem aspectos relacionados ao abandono familiar, ao distanciamento dos demais filhos em detrimento do cuidado ao filho deficiente, ao obstáculo em se relacionar socialmente e acerca do prognóstico e cuidados com seu filho. O ambiente hospitalar gera repercussões psicológicas diante da expectativa e da falta de esperança em relação à cura do filho, sabendo que este poderá ir a óbito. Os profissionais de saúde podem favorecer transformações incríveis, gerando um novo "cuidar", mais amplo e humanizado, facilitando a recuperação/reestruturação familiar diante desse novo universo.
