A Reconfigurable 5-to-14 bit SAR ADC for Battery-Powered Medical Instrumentation

Abstract: In battery-powered medical instrumentation, the resolution and signal bandwidth of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have to be adapted to the needs of the application to avoid power wastage. This paper presents a reconfigurable successive approximation register (SAR) ADC implemented in 130 nm CMOS that resolves 5-14 bit with a maximum achievable effective number of bits (ENOB) of 13.5 using non-subtractive dither. In the proposed ADC design, the power consumption can be traded for accuracy to improve the en… Show more

“…3) SAR-ADC: In this fully differential SAR-ADC design [25], the sampling/settling time and the bias current of the analog buffers are programmed for each of the successiveapproximation steps. A majority voting mechanism after the SAR-ADC dynamic comparator is employed to reduce thermal noise floor while Cascaded Integrated Comb (CIC) filters further lower it while performing downsampling.…”

“…Battery systems have advanced especially in the past two decades and have been developed for a wide range of applications, such as electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and medical devices, among others [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. With the increasing demand for cost and size reduction and improved performance, additional advanced functions in a smaller size are increasingly being included in advanced battery systems.…”
