Antitumor Activity of <i>Diospyros peregrina</i> on Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma in Mice

Abstract: The methanol extract of Diospyros peregrina (Ebenaceae) bark (MEDP) were evaluated for antitumor activity against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC)-bearing swiss albino mice. The extract was administered at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight per day for 14 days after 24 h of tumor inoculation. After the last dose and 18 h fasting, the mice were sacrificed. The present study deals with the effect of MEDP on the growth of transplantable murine tumor, life span of EAC-bearing hosts and hematological profile… Show more

“…Because of their biocompatibility, NEs have been widely used in the medical field for delivery and controlled release of the hydrophobic anticancer drugs because they present a very large surface area and good long-term stability. As expected in the EAC control group, a significant increase in body weight was observed [10]. However, animals treated with DOX-Sol showed a further significant decrease in the body weight indicating more reduction in the i.p.…”

“…Daily monitoring and recording of the mortality were done for 60 days to assess the mean survival time (MST), increased life span percentage (% ILS) and survival percentage (% S). The MST, % ILS and % S were calculated based on the following equations 27 .…”

“…The EAC control group has significantly increased in body weight than the other groups, which is attributed to the growth of the EAC in the peritoneal cavity. [ 12 ] By comparing the results of our experimental groups and previous studies, treatment with the DOX/LNE and DOX+GEM/LNE (0.1 and 0.2mL) prevented the body weight from the great loss induced by DOX and huge increase that happened in the EAC control group. [ 9 17 18 ] Furthermore, the MST of the tumor-bearing mice treated with GEM/LNE, DOX/LNE, GEM+DOX-Sol, GEM+DOX/LNE (0.1mL), and GEM+DOX/LNE (0.2mL) formulations exceeded the MSTs of Bl-NE, GEM-Sol, and DOX-Sol treatment, which implies an enhancement in the efficacy of the antitumor drugs.…”
