Buccoadhesive drug delivery system of isosorbide dinitrate: Formulation and evaluation

Abstract: Buccoadhesive buccal delivery systems for isosorbide dinitrate in the form of unidirectional buccal films were developed and characterized for improving bioavailability. The films were formulated by solvent casting method using different bioadhesive polymers like Carbopol 934P and polyvinyl pyrrolidone by using two different plasticizers propylene glycol and diethyl phthalate. Unidirectional release was achieved by preparing composite films with backing membrane. The films were characterized on the basis of th… Show more

“…The films were prepared by the method of solvent casting technique employing 'O' shape ring placed on a glass surface as substrate. [6,7,8] Composition of a single circular cast film of various formulations is given in the Table 1. The calculated quantities of polymers Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose -15 cps (HPMC) and Poly Vinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) were dispersed in 10ml of mixture of methanol and dichloromethane in ratio 1:1.…”

“…Variation in thickness and weight between different formulations may be due to differences in density, molecular weight, and viscosity of the different polymers (28). Table I point out the small thickness (15-27 μm) and weight values (16-27 mg) of the prepared inserts, which is considered advantageous for nasal application.…”
