Characterization of the Effects of the Shiitake Culinary-Medicinal Mushroom, Lentinus edodes (Agaricomycetes), on Severe Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Rats

Abstract: This study evaluated the protective effect of Lentinus edodes in rats with streptozotocin-induced gestational diabetes mellitus (STZ-GDM) when administered orally. The rats received from the 1st to the 19th day of gestation daily doses of 100 or 200 mg/kg of lyophilized and reconstituted L. edodes; the animals in the saline control group and diabetic control group received a saline solution (DS). Gestational diabetes mellitus was induced by streptozotocin (80 mg/kg, administered intraperitoneally) on the fourt… Show more

“…The ginsenosides are not detected in the blood after ginseng and ginsenoside Re treatment due to poor systemic bioavailability of ginsenosides [ 28 ]. Shiitake mushroom, which is rich in β-glucans and vitamin D, also has anti-diabetic activities [ 5 , 38 , 39 ]. β-glucan changes the gut microbiome and may be associated with improving insulin sensitivity.…”

“…Four weeks of CCl4 therapy resulted in a reasonable amount of collagen fibril deposition. 43 Syringic acid and vanillic acid clearly suppressed collagen aggregation and significantly decreased hepatic hydroxyproline content, which is a quantitative marker of fibrosis, according to Azan-stained liver parts. 44 Both of these compounds held hepatocyte viability while inhibiting the activation of cultured hepatic stellate cells, which play a key role in liver fibrogenesis.…”

“…Regular consumption of this mushroom can increase immune function, improve the metabolic profile and reduce lipid levels and oxidative stress [14,15]. A previous study from our working group correlated the Lentinus edodes exposure with improvement in severe GDM [16]. Otherwise, we aimed to investigate the safety use of Lentinus edodes as a therapeutic aid in two GDM conditions: (i) exposure to Lentinus edodes from gestational day 1 to 19 (before fetus implantation) and (ii) exposure to Lentinus edodes from gestation day 9 to 19 (after fetus implantation), considering their potentialities as functional food.…”
