Co-conspirators in a new mechanism for the degradation of Δ9-desaturase

Abstract: Edited by Dennis R. Voelker ⌬9-Desaturases are central enzymes in unsaturated fatty acid synthesis regulated at the transcriptional and mRNA levels and by proteasomal degradation. A new study by Murakami et al. uncovers a novel regulatory pathway in which an N-terminal di-proline motif in the Drosophila ⌬9-desaturase mediates protein degradation by a calcium-dependent cysteine protease in response to unsaturated fatty acids. This study provides new details of desaturase regulation with therapeutic implications… Show more

“…Human SCD1 expression is mainly modulated by transcriptional regulation, supported by the observation that the promoter of the SCD gene contains many consensus binding sites for transcription factors that are involved in the regulation of lipogenic pathways [35]. However, protein degradation pathways are also implicated in the modulation of SCD1 activity [36,37,38]. Two main pathways that activate lipogenesis can be distinguished: The insulin and glucose signaling pathways.…”

“…SCD1 is the rate-limiting enzyme of biosynthesis of monounsaturated fatty acids. It plays an important role in de novo synthesis of fatty acids (Dumas and Ntambi, 2017;Tracz-Gaszewska and Dobrzyn, 2019). LM treatment may have a negative effect on fatty acid metabolism of sea cucumber.…”

“…Мононенасыщенные жирные кислоты являются важными субстратами для синтеза сложных липидов, включая триглицериды, сложные эфиры холестерина, сложные эфиры воска и фосфолипиды [19,61]. Считается, что соотношение насыщенных и ненасыщенных жирных кислот контролирует структурную целостность и текучесть мембран, влияя на широкий спектр физиологических функций [72].…”
