The impact of entrepreneurship and small business activities in Africa has habitually been lower and receives less attention in research. This study aims at investigating the mediation role of innovations on the relationship between entrepreneurial ecosystem approach and productive entrepreneurship. Using panel dataset of 35 African countries, the study contributes to the existing literature in two ways. First, the panel regression findings contribute to the theoretical debate and fill the empirical gap, recent research has been dominated by conceptual works. The findings reveal mixed (positive and negative) and weak insignificant direct influence of eco-factors such as finance, government support and programmes, knowledge, market and culture on productive entrepreneurship. However, their influence is more pronounced when innovations mediate the relationship. Second, it provides new insight to policymakers and practitioners in developing policies and programmes that foster entrepreneurial ecosystems and improved innovation performance for better entrepreneurship development. It concludes with suggestions for future research.

The present research aimed to analyze the effects of different dimensions of the entrepreneurship ecosystem on the agricultural students' entrepreneurial skills mediated by social and emotional intelligence. The research was conducted among the agricultural students at Zabol University (N = 893) of whom 269 students were sampled by the stratified randomization technique with proportional allocation. The measurement instrument was a questionnaire whose validity was confirmed by a panel of entrepreneurship experts and its reliability was determined by calculating the ordinal coefficient theta (0.81-0.92) in a pilot study. The results showed that the indicators used to measure the research variables were consistent with the factor structure and theoretical framework of the research. The entrepreneurship ecosystem was found to have a positive and significant effect on the students' social intelligence and emotional intelligence. Also, the students' entrepreneurial skills were found to be influenced by the entrepreneurship ecosystem, social intelligence, and emotional intelligence positively and significantly. It can be concluded that higher social and emotional intelligence in students and the improvement of the entrepreneurship ecosystem can provide the conditions for the students to acquire and reinforce entrepreneurial skills.

The role of entrepreneurial ecosystems in technological and social challenges

Although there is a common consensus about what an entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) is, the question of how EE dynamics interact with technology and social change remains unclear. In this introductory article to our Special Issue on the role of EE in technological and social challenges, we systematically review the corpus of literature in this field of research. Leveraging bibliometric techniques, we present a review of the most influential papers and their key research topics, synthesized across four thematic groups: (i) university‐based EE, (ii) entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems, (iii) dynamic EE models, and (iv) digital entrepreneurship ecosystems. Within this thematic frame, a synopsis of the papers presented within the special issue is provided, highlighting their research theme addressed, theoretical grounding, and methods leveraged. We conclude this article by identifying potential future research questions that may be advantageous trajectories for the EE research community to address when advancing the field in the coming years.
