This study aimed at investigating the thermal and electrochemical behavior of montmorillonite clay-8hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) film in the absence and presence of aqueous Fe(III) ions. The solid film characterization by means of UV spectroscopy, thermal (TG/DTG and TG-DTA, simultaneous) studies, SEM and optical images, and XRD suggested the formation of the ternary complex type: {Pt/[[Si-O] n [Fe(III)(OH 2) 3 (8-HQ) k ]} 3-n-k , with thermal stability up to 300°C. The electrochemical study was carried out on a platinum electrode modified by mechanical deposition of a thin solid film of the binary composite (SWy-1:8-HQ) from an aqueous suspension. The mechanical stability of the film was followed by performing 80 cyclic voltammograms. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) at different ferric ions concentration (C Fe(III)), followed by a study of the effect of the scan rate (v) with a fixed C Fe(III) ions. In the CVs, two independent pairs of current peaks, A/D and C/B, were observed. For Fe(III) ions in solution, log i p versus log v relationship shows a process controlled first by adsorption (pair of peaks A/D) and then by diffusion control (pair of peaks C/B). The current function i p /v 1/2 versus v and i p a /i p c versus v allowed a suggestion of two homogeneous coupled chemical reactions associated with CE and EC mechanisms, respectively, both with fast reversible chemical reactions. The first investigation of a modified electrode showed good sensitivity (S = 25.1 lA/lmol L-1) to low concentrations of ferric ions and detection limit [LOD = (2.4 ± 0.01) lmol L-1 ] and high sensitivity to traces of O 2 , showing that this system has great analytical potentials.

This review shows several issues and a brief discussion of the Brazilian energy matrix, developed as a source of automotive fuel based on the culture of sugar cane with subsequent process of fermentation for ethanol production. Although ethanol is also present as an additive to gasoline consumed in Brazil, we intend to deal only on the anhydrous ethanol, the genuinely Brazilian fuel. It is scope of this text to present the various chemical constituents present in this energy matrix as well as, listing the main analytical methods used for monitoring and quantification of organic substances, metals and some anions, commonly found in ethanol.Keywords: Ethanol vehicle; clean fuel; heavy metals. ResumoEste texto de revisão apresenta vários aspectos, e uma breve discussão sobre a matriz energética brasileira, desenvolvida como fonte de combustível automotivo baseado na cultura da cana de açúcar, com posterior processo de sua fermentação para a produção de etanol. Embora o álcool etílico também esteja presente, como aditivo da gasolina consumida no território brasileiro, pretende-se discorrer somente sobre o etanol anidro, ou seja, o combustível genuinamente brasileiro. É escopo deste texto apresentar os vários constituintes químicos presentes nesta matriz energética, bem como, elencar as principais metodologias analíticas empregadas para o monitoramento e quantificação de substâncias orgânicas, de metais e de alguns ânions, comumente encontrados no álcool etílico.Palavras-chave: Etanol veicular; combustível limpo; metais pesados.

A new chelation ion chromatographic system for the determination of transition metals was developed. The isocratic separation of Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ simultaneously with Mn 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ was obtained on an iminodiacetic acid (IDA) functionalized silica column 150 Â 4.0 mm i.d. with an optimized eluent composed of 2.5 mmol L À1 dipicolinic acid, 10 mmol L À1 HCl and 60% v/v of methanol at flow rate of 0.5 mL min À1. Post-column reaction with 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) was used for sensitive spectrophotometric detection at 510 nm of the separated metals at low ppb level. The applicability of the developed method to the analysis of fuel ethanol was demonstrated.
