This work elucidated the antibacterial efficacy, corrosion resistance, and cytotoxicity of electroplated copper-substituted hydroxyapatite (CuHAP) coating on titanium (Ti). The fabricated CuHAP coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energydispersive X-ray analysis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction studies. The CuHAP coating had needle-like apatite crystals, the doping of Cu 2? into HAP reduced porosity, and the coating became denser. The CuHAP crystals were carbonated with a few of Cu 2? incorporation (about 0.80 wt%). The Cu 2? ions were homogenously deposited into HAP films. Potentiodynamic polarisation test revealed that the CuHAP coating provided good barrier characteristics and achieved superior corrosion protection for Ti substrates. The in vitro antibacterial activity of asprepared CuHAP coating was evaluated against Escherichia coli and was found to be effectively high against bacterial colonization. Bioactivity test conducted by soaking the coatings in simulated body fluid demonstrated that CuHAP coating can quickly induce bone-like apatite nucleation and growth. In vitro biocompatibility tests, MTT, were employed to assess the cytotoxicity of Cu-HAP coating with osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells. The obtained HAP coating doped with a low content of Cu 2? exhibited good cytocompatibility and had no toxicity toward MC3T3-E1.

Active ingredients of ginsenoside, Rg1 and Re, are able to inhibit the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and promote the growth of vascular endothelial cells. These capabilities are of interest for developing a novel drug-eluting stent to potentially solve the current problem of late-stent thrombosis and poor endotheliazation. Therefore, this study was aimed to incorporate ginsenoside into degradable coating of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). Drug mixture composed of ginseng extract and 10% to 50% of PLGA (xPLGA/g) was coated on electropolished stainless steel 316L substrate by using a dip coating technique. The coating was characterized principally by using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and contact angle analysis, while the drug release profile of ginsenosides Rg1 and Re was determined by using mass spectrometry at a one month immersion period. Full and homogenous coating coverage with acceptable wettability was found on the 30PLGA/g specimen. All specimens underwent initial burst release dependent on their composition. The 30PLGA/g and 50PLGA/g specimens demonstrated a controlled drug release profile having a combination of diffusion- and swelling-controlled mechanisms of PLGA. The study suggests that the 30PLGA/g coated specimen expresses an optimum composition which is seen as practicable for developing a controlled release drug-eluting stent.

Determination of CT number and density profile of binderless, pre-treated and tannin-based Rhizophora spp. particleboards using computed tomography imaging and electron density phantom AIP Conference Proceedings 1659, 040004 (2015) Abstract.A set of tannin-based Rhizophora spp. particleboard phantoms with dimension of 30 cm x 30 cm was fabricated at target density of 1.0 g/cm 3 . The mass attenuation coefficient of the phantom was measured using 60 Co gamma source. The phantoms were scanned using Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and the percentage depth dose (PDD) of the phantom was calculated using treatment planning system (TPS) at 6 MV and 10 MV x-ray and compared to that in solid water phantoms. The result showed that the mass attenuation coefficient of tannin-based Rhizohora spp. phantoms was near to the value of water with χ 2 value of 1.2. The measured PDD also showed good agreement with solid water phantom at both 6 MV and 10 MV x-ray with percentage deviation below 8% at depth beyond the maximum dose, Z max .
