“…The first instance represented a widely used system in which the low background expression of vtg in adult male liver forms the basis of the screening assay. Examples of this can be found for adult tilapia (O. aureus and O. mossambicus) and other teleost males [27,33,61,[67][68][69][70][71]. In accordance with the present work on O. mossambicus, these studies demonstrated relatively low levels of vtg expressed in the liver prior to estrogen-associated induction.…”

“…Recent interest in the molecular‐level effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the aquatic environment, as well as targeting molecular changes in specific organs in sentinel species, has resulted in the need for large numbers of adult fathead minnow males and females for use in these studies . Current gene expression and proteomics studies with adult fathead minnows conducted in our laboratory have required the use of as many as 500 adult fathead minnow males for a single experiment, and a similar increase has been observed in tests that require larval fish . For example, within our lab, as many as 3000 fathead minnow larvae of the same age are required for the bioassessment of mine waste serial dilution samples .…”

“…The fathead minnow ( Pimephales promelas ) is used routinely as a test organism for aquatic toxicity testing of pure chemicals, effluents, and receiving waters . Various fathead minnow testing methodologies describe the use of animals ranging from embryos to sexually mature adults, as well as every possible life stage in between these extremes .…”
