Electrochemotherapy as a New Modality in Interventional Oncology: A Review

Abstract: Electroporation is a well-known phenomenon that occurs at the cell membrane when cells are exposed to high-intensity electric pulses. Depending on electric pulse amplitude and number of pulses, applied electroporation can be reversible with membrane permeability recovery or irreversible. Reversible electroporation is used to introduce drugs or genetic material into the cell without affecting cell viability. Electrochemotherapy refers to a combined treatment: electroporation and drug injection to enhance its cy… Show more

“…Another IRE-based approach to neoplastic lesions combining non-thermal effects of IRE with local application of chemotherapy and known as electrochemotherapy (ECT) should be mentioned. It is based on the application of intense and short electric pulses that make the cell membrane permeable, allowing for the penetration of chemotherapeutic agents directly into the cytosol so as to induce apoptotic cell death in the targeted neoplastic tissue [8]. ECT is an established treatment modality for skin malignancies but has been also proposed for the treatment of hepatic tumors.…”

“…15,16 This phenomenon, known as electroporation (EP) can enhance the uptake of external molecules up to 1000 times. 17 When EP is applied towards the uptake of chemotherapeutics, this non-surgical, physical procedure is called Electrochemotherapy (ECT).…”
