Evaluation of Gastro-protective Activity of Myristica fragrans on Ethanol-induced Ulcer in Albino Rats

Abstract: Myristica fragrans seeds are traditionally used to treat dyspepsia, vomiting and abdominal pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of Myristica fragrans in ethanol induced gastric ulcer. Study was carried out on rats, divided into four groups; negative control, positive control, standard drug control, and Myristica fragrans extract treated rats. The pH, ulcer index, acidity values and histopathological examination of stomach were evaluated. Myristica fragrans significantly (P<0… Show more

“…The model we chose (phenylbutazoneinduced ulcer) is similar in terms of mechanism to the indomethacin model, and our results are alike (reduction in erosion and inflammation, regeneration of the surface tissue layer). The ethanol-induced ulcer model (used by most authors to study the preventive effect of plant extracts, administered before the induction of the ulcer) [40,47] is mainly characterized by desquamation, severe and marked erosion of the epithelial surface, vacuolation and necrosis, a disorderly and loose arrangement of the epithelial cells, as well as infiltrates of neutrophils/eosinophils [21,29]. The same types of lesions are present in the case of ulcers induced by NSAIDs, but the phenomena are more discreet and regeneration is faster [27,45].…”

“…To quantify these effects on the decrease in gastric secretion and the increase in defence factors (endogenous prostaglandins), numerous studies have evaluated extracts standardized in phytocompounds [28]; thus, various methods of producing experimental ulcers have been developed -by ligation of the pylorus, by administration of reserpine, indomethacin or HCl/ethyl alcohol or by induction of stress ulcer; in all cases, the experimental animal used is preferably the rat. The present study aims to evaluate the antiulcerous potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of the spiciform inflorescence of the species Prunella vulgaris L. due to the high content of active ingredients [5,32,39,40,[45][46][47]52]. Prunella vulgaris L. is a perennial species widespread in the Romanian flora.…”

“…Administration of ethanol causes direct damage to inner-most layer, resulting to gastric lesions, swelling, inflammation, blood spots and obstruction of blood vessels. [12][13][14] In aspirin induced ulcer model, usage of qarahine (250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) significantly reduced the number of lesions (83.19, 96.46 and 93.81%) and severity of gastric injuries (up to 60%) with subsequent reduction in ulcer index. A significant decrease in the number of lesions by qarahine might be due to abatement of gastric acid secretion that is the major cause of ulcer.…”

“…The findings of present study agree with the previous investigation. 13 The increased production of histamine is directly proportional to the gastric acid secretions. Qarahine might inhibit the binding of histamine to H 2 receptors.…”

“…[4][5][6] It contains epicatechin, catechin, flavanoids like kaempferol, dihydrokaempferol and toxifolin. [7][8][9][10][11] The protective mechanisms of the body against gastric ulcer disease include basic mucus which neutralizes acid, quick epithelial regeneration, high blood flow which will clear oxidative stress, mucosal sulphydral and gland resistance to acid. Gastric ulcer develops when these protective mechanisms are impaired and there is imbalance between protective and destructive mechanisms.…”
