Evaluation of the Color Stability, Water Sorption, and Solubility of Current Resin Composites

Abstract: This study aims to assess the color stability, water sorption, and solubility of 11 resin composites as commercially available dental products. Twenty samples (10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) of each material were fabricated using a customized silicone mold, followed by immersion in each of curry, coffee, wine, and distilled water for 28 days (n = 5). Baseline shade and color changes (ΔE) were measured using a reflection spectrophotometer. The CIE L*, a*, b* system was used to evaluate the color chang… Show more

“…Composite materials with a micro-filter have a tensile strength from 30 to 56 MPa, and composite materials with a macro-filler from 35 to 50 MPa [24]. The tensile strength of composite materials is comparable to that of amalgam, which is 60 MPa [1,23,[25][26][27].…”

“…Most of the composite materials, in addition to the essential components, contain monomers such as HEMA, EGDMA, DEGDMA, and TEGDMA, which are lower molecular weight compounds. In addition to the substances mentioned above, composite materials include initiators, activators, and additives required in the polymerization process, e.g., light stabilizers [1][2][3].…”

“…The evaluation in current study of water sorption (WS) and water solubility (SL) have been made in accordance with the ISO 4049 standard. WS and water SL values of resin composites should not exceed 40 ug/mm 3 and 7.5 ug/mm 3 respectively according to ISO 4049 [17,21]. All the tested resin composites materials in this study met these criteria.…”

“…In general terms, WS and SL also correlates with the type of the ller [13]. BU contained "pre-reacted glass ionomer (PRG)"-based uoro-alumina-silicate glass, which is assuming to release and recharge uoride by absorbing a certain amount of water [21]. Besides, giomer composites might have more surface vacancies via the release of uoride ions [25].…”

“…Various research groups have already established that the behavior of dental resins is influenced by the corrosive influence of water and/or by the periodic masticatory stresses that are applied to the material. Elution, deterioration, relaxation, accelerated crack growth, visco-elastic effects, and decreased wear resistance are all potential outcomes that might be brought about by these causes [ 31 , 44 , 45 , 46 ].…”
