Genotypes and Phenotypes of Enterococci Isolated From Broiler Chickens

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution and persistence of antimicrobial resistance genotypes of enterococci from broilers fed bambermycin (BAM), penicillin (PEN), salinomycin (SAL), bacitracin (BAC), or a salinomycin/bacitracin combination (SALBAC) for 35 days. A total of 95 enterococci from cloacal (n = 40), cecal (n = 38), and litter samples collected on day 36 (n = 17) were isolated weekly from day 7 to 36. All isolates were identified by API-20 Strep and their antimicrobial suscept… Show more

“…Although it was proposed to be a factor for predicting the potential of infections ( Udaondo et al., 2017 ), whether it can be well-established needs to be determined. The changes in microbiota composition beneficial to chicken gut health in response to EO treatment have also been suggested previously ( Cooper et al., 2013 , Rehman et al., 2018 ). To determine the cause-effect relationship, further studies are required.…”

“…Of the 45 known Enterococcus species derived from different bird species, the most commonly isolated are: E. faecalis, E. faecium, E. hirae, E. cecorum, E. durans, E. avium, E. casseliflavus, E. gallinarum, E. raffinosus, and E. columbae [4,5].…”

“…Such selection could explain the maintenance of a non-functional ant(6`)-Ia gene. Indeed, there is a strong association between the presence of the gene cluster aadE-sat4-aph3 and the ermB (erythromycin resistance) gene in Tn5405 [13,38] FIGURE Sequences of nucleotide and amino acid obtained from ant(6')-Ia gene of Enterococcus faecium CL8134a, an incongruent strain identified in the presente study, and the reference strain (AF330699.1), aligned in the MEGA software using CLUSTALW.…”

“…Among enterococci, the most common AME associated with the inactivation of streptomycin is a nucleotidyltransferase encoded by the ant(6)-Ia gene, also recognized as the aadE gene [10]. This gene is present in the gene cluster aadE-sat4-aph3 which is generally integrated into the transposable element Tn5405-like, disseminated among E. faecium of 5 different ecological origins as well as Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci [11][12][13].…”
