The purpose of the study is to characterize the essence of the assessment system for the performance of local public authorities: challenges of the modern era. It has been proven that the assessment of the performance of local public authorities plays a crucial role in the functioning of modern governance, offering a structured way to ensure accountability, transparency, and efficiency in the provision of public services. It has been determined that the assessment of the work of local public authorities contributes to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of public service delivery. Through regular assessments, authorities can identify strengths and areas in need of improvement. It has been established that local public authorities are key elements of state governance, providing direct implementation of state policy at the local level. Key stages of assessing the work of local public authorities have been identified. It has been proven that today's conditions of fullscale war in Ukraine pose a number of extraordinary challenges for local public authorities, requiring immediate response and adaptation to new realities. The main challenges in the work of local public authorities during wartime have been identified. It has been found that local public authorities must find ways to support business, including through tax incentives, grants, or consulting services, to stimulate economic recovery and ensure employment. It has been proven that the assessment of the performance of local public authorities plays a decisive role in increasing the efficiency and transparency of governance at the local level. It has been determined that such assessments can identify best practices and spread them among different jurisdictions, contributing to the overall improvement of governance standards. The assessment system for their work must be flexible and adaptable to wartime conditions, while ensuring transparency and accountability in management.
