Noise-like pulse generation from a thulium-doped fiber laser using nonlinear polarization rotation with different net anomalous dispersion

Abstract: A mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) with different net anomalous dispersion is demonstrated. When the cavity dispersion is −1.425 ps 2 , the noise-like (NL) pulse with coherence spike width of 406 fs and pulse energy of 12.342 nJ is generated at a center wavelength of 2003.2 nm with 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 23.20 nm. In the experimental period of 400 min, the 3 dB spectral bandwidth variation, the output power fluctuation, and the central wavelength s… Show more

“…Such peculiar pulse regime has been first reported in details from the MLFL experiment in 1997, 108 which is then called NLPs. NLPs have been found in the fiber lasers based on the multiple mode-locking mechanisms 96,[109][110][111][112][113][114] and, therefore, are characterized with universality. In other words, NLP generation is quite generic dynamics for partially modelocked lasers that emit pulse packets of optical noise burst with the fundamental frequency or the harmonics.…”

“…5(b). Apparently, the trace shows a coherent peak on top of the background level, manifesting a classic signature of the noise-like pulse [30], [31]. The inset of Fig.…”

“…4 is not the effect of dispersion, but it is caused by the increase of a NLP pulse energy, for the same pumping power, due to lower repetition rate (resulted from the longer cavity). The effect of different net anomalous dispersions on the NLP generation has been investigated before in the TDFL mode-locked by NPR; however, no dependence between spectral width, central wavelength, and the additional fiber length was noticed [21]. The broadest spectrum (23.2 nm) and the shortest autocorrelation spike (0.626 ps) were measured for the shortest additional single mode fiber (SMF) length of 10 m; however, for the 200-m-long SMF the optical spectrum was broader (20.47 m) than that for the 20-m-long (18.56 m).…”
