Precedent names greatly contribute to the national cultural canon. The names of famous persons, as well as names of animals and ethnonyms are signs which symbolize national cultural values and concepts. Precedent names may be borrowed by other cultures. These processes involve changes in the name's connotations as well as in its extra-linguistic references. This can be illustrated by the epigrams about famous persons where borrowed images undergo the national cultural adaptation. The content of units of the national cultural canon in the language consciousness of native speakers is discovered through surveys and associative experiments which help find out the list of basic precedent names, texts and stereotypes. Diachronic studies show essential changes in the national cultural canon. In the near future famous scientists, athletes, musicians, and actors will dominate in the Russian national cultural canon alongside with political leaders and patriotic wars heroes. A precedent name becomes symbolised and is associated with a certain quality (or qualities). The person's name is employed to measure the values of the national cultural canon. In this aspect, it acquires an idiomatic character. One of the ways to create idioms that are impossible to literally translate into other languages is metonymy, and particularly synecdoche. The nationally identified metonymy may be defined as 'frame metonymy'. However, national identity does not always mean the opposition of "native" and "foreign". National self-identification should not only be aimed at contrasting ourselves with other nations butto a greater dealat better understanding of our own culture.

Research background: Twenty-first century’s sees strong globalization trends in which mass media play crucial role in shaping public opinion which might saliently impact intercultural communication on the international level. Purpose of the article: This paper focuses on the representation of the image of Russia and Central and Eastern Europe in the British press and, besides, it sets out the role of stereotyping in intercultural communication. The article writers assume that the stereotypes play pivotal role in image shaping of a country in the media. Above all, the most efficient way to not stereotype is a straightforward communication of the participants alongside with the knowledge of the participant’s background, i. e. cultural knowledge. Drawing on the information from the British press, Russia, Central as well as Eastern Europe appears not solely as a geographical region. On the contrary, despite the fast economic, social and political development, its image abroad is still predominantly negative. Methods: The paper, in conjunction with the cultural linguistics and cognitive approach, reveals the range of metaphorical expressions, in particular cognitive aspect of metaphors used by British journalists, which, in turn form the image of Russia in the British press. Findings & Value added: The paper suggests that the analysis of the image of country in the mass media might apply to the investigation of images of other countries as well as to comparative studies.

The paper attempts to identify semantic transformations of precedent names in Japanese songs. Material of practical research is based on the texts of 62 songs modern Japanese electronic band 水曜日のカンパネラ (Suiyoubi no Kanpanera). The choice of this artist is due to the current popularity of the groups among the number of new wave Japanese artists of the 2010s. The authors offer their thematic classification of precedent names in the song's lyrics. In the course of the research, the authors come to the conclusion that not all precedent names remain in the original, primordial meaning, but can have either several meanings or radically change the meaning. The authors see the main reason for semantic transformations in the dynamically changing everyday life of the Japanese and their communication, as well as in the admirers of these songs, which are usually young people and adolescents.
