Preparation of electrospun silk fibroin nanofibers from solutions containing native silk fibrils

Abstract: Electrospinning solutions containing native silk fibrils with varied diameter and length were firstly achieved by dissolving silk in CaCl2/Formic acid solvents. The structure of nanofibrils significantly improved the spinnability of electrospinning solution. The diameter of electrospun silk fibroin (SF) nanofibers increased from 40 nm to 1.8 μm, which could be achieved through increasing the solution concentration from 2 to 10%, implying a good size control over a wide range in this process. The structure of S… Show more

“…Nanofiber based scaffolds are also highly porous structures with good interconnectivity. There is a variety of polymers used for nanofiber fabrication, including both natural, synthetic, and their blends (Bhattarai et al, ; He et al, ; Huang et al, ; Liu et al, ; Shafiee et al, ; Um et al, , Wright et al, ).…”

“…Another way of producing silk mats and nanofibers is electrospinning. Activated, i.e., previously dissolved silk (typically stored in dry form) is re‐dissolved in FA or HFIP‐containing solutions and supplied to the electrospinning system . By changing starter solution (protein concentration content, helper chemicals, and other blended compounds of interest), different aspects of the finally produced materials are governed …”

“…35,38,39 Natural polymers include collagen, [40][41][42] gelatin, 43,44 chitosan, 45,46 and silk fibroin. 47,48 These fibers resemble the natural ECM, as they are thin continuous fibers with a high surface-to-volume ratio. 28,36 Two-dimensional (2D) nanofiber meshes can be used to guide orientation of CNS neurites, not only to aid direct nerve tissue reconnection but also to permit the study of degeneration of the CNS neuron circuitry and high throughput screening.…”
