Reliability of digital panoramic radiographs in detecting calcified carotid artery atheromatous plaques: A clinical study

Abstract: To conclude, digital panoramic radiographs had good sensitivity and high specificity in detecting CCAAP. If properly trained, dentists can detect such plaques and can refer patients to physician for timely medical treatment.

“…In the present study, a prevalence of 70.8% of soft tissue calcifications was observed for enhanced images. This number was higher than that reported in the literature by Garay et al (2014) (Garay et al, 2014;Khambete et al, 2014;Ribeiro et al, 2018). We also believe that the prevalence of soft tissue was higher because the number of different types of calcifications assessed by the examiners of this study.…”

“…The calcification of the superior horn of the thyroid cartilage is little discussed in the scientific literature because a clinical intervention is not necessary as for atheroma. Khambete, Kumar, Risbud, and Joshi (2014) observed an increase in the prevalence of calcified atheroma detected in panoramic radiographs, since previous studies indicated that this prevalence was 2%-11%, and for these authors, this number is much higher (34%).…”
