Ruminal Impaction Due to Indigestible Foreign Bodies in a Cow and Its Surgical Management

Abstract: A seven year old cow was presented with the history of chronic recurrent tympany for last 3 months. Entangled materials were palpated inside the rumen while recording the ruminal motility by pressed fist on left paralumbar fossa. Rumenotomy was conducted. Around 30 kg of foreign materials were removed and the animal recovered uneventfully.

“…In the present study majority of the animals (90.00%) showed recurrent tympany might be due to large amount indigestible material in rumen and alterations in the rumino-reticular motility posing difficulty to eructation. Similar findings were reported by Behera et al (2013) and Nayak et al (2014). While abnormal rumination was observed in all animals, among them 75% showed suspended while 25% showed decreased rumination.…”

“…Ruminal impaction is considered an important internal disease in ruminants, such as dairy cows, sheep, and goats. It has been reported that it could be caused by many types of agents (Behera et al 2013 ; Igbokwe et al 2003 ; Jones & Money, 1965 ; Khose et al 2010 ; Suthar et al 2011 ). This study describes a novel case of ruminal impaction in Boer goats due to the plant Ficus esquiroliana .…”
