Grammar is an important component of a language that contains rules on the sentence structure construction and meaning system of the language. The grammar usage has a contribution in the language learning process, one of which is in translation. This research aimed to discover the correlation between grammar usage and Indonesian – English translation ability of the fourth-semester English Study Program students. The instruments of the research were sentence completion and error recognition questions for English grammar test and Indonesia – English translation essay for translation test. The statistical analysis using Pearson product-moment formula was applied to analyze the correlation between grammar usage and Indonesian – English translation ability of the fourth-semester students. The result of data analysis revealed that the Pearson correlation value r-counted of 0.837 was higher than r-table of 0.320 at the level of confidence 0.05 which meant that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and of null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The research findings revealed that there existed a significant correlation between English grammar usage and Indonesian – English translation ability the fourth-semester English Study Program students of Universitas Riau. It is implied that the proficient English grammar students displayed commensurate in Indonesian – English translation ability while those who lack of grammar usage ability found difficulty in translation tasks. This research highlighted the critical role of grammar in shaping translation of the fourth-semester students of Universitas Riau English Study Program.

The crucial problem of translating Indonesia to English language are the students’ lack of knowledge and mother tongue (source language) that two of them are grammar and vocabulary. The researcher focused to measure the correlation among grammar mastery and vocabulary size toward translation ability on report text at seventh semester students in State Islamic Institute of Palangka Raya that use quantitative method with a correlational design. The researcher’s instruments were three test which were grammar mastery, vocabulary size, and translation test that were tested to the 32 students’ translation class in academic year 2017/2018. The numerical data were analyzed by Pearson Product Moment that showed that: (1) the most students got “fail” (43.75%) grammar mastery, (2) the most students got “excellent” (46.875%) vocabulary size, (3) the most students got “enough” (87.5%) translation ability. The significant correlation among three variables were proved by correlation coefficient 0.604 (strong category), Fchange > Ftable = 8.349 > 3.33, and the contribution of grammar mastery and vocabulary size delivered 36.5%. Thus, it sums that students’ grammar mastery and vocabulary size correlate with the quality of students’ translation ability on report text at seventh semester students in academic year 2017/2018. Vocabulary and translation are two aspects that have a close relationship in learning English as to be able to translate a text student should have adequate vocabulary mastery. The presented study aims to figure out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability, and to explore their problems in translating English descriptive text into Indonesian. This study applied quantitative research by using the correlational method, and the respondents were 32 students of grade X C at SMAN 1 Purwanegara, Central Java. Furthermore, in order to gather the data, researchers used tests and semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using Pearson-Product Moment correlation using SPSS 26.0. The findings revealed that the mean score of students’ vocabulary mastery was 66.72, and the mean score of translation ability was 63.72. Meanwhile, the correlation value (r) between the vocabulary mastery and English-Indonesian translation ability score is 0.786. Thus, based on the interpretation score of correlation proposed by Sugiyono (2018), the correlation between vocabulary mastery and the ability to translate the descriptive text was in the high category (0.786), Furthermore, the result of hypothesis testing revealed that the comparison of the “rcount” and the “rtable” shows that rcount as much as 0,786 is clearly higher than “rtable” value which is 5% or 0,338 and 1% or 0,435. Therefore, there is a high correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate descriptive text into Indonesian.
