“…Specific designs include heat exchangers, reactors, static mixers and others, and thus vary in size and shape [ 2 , 7 ]. The essential feature in all applications is the extremely high surface-to-volume ratio, stemming from small linear dimensions, which is the basis for the majority of advantages over conventional sized chemical process equipment [ 8 ]. This property improves selectivity and increases the yield of the chemical reaction, while also facilitating a more efficient heat transfer [ 7 ].…”

“…Without special equipment, image sequences of 25 full frames/s are achievable, and, thus, moderately fast changing processes are accessible for detection. With individual wavelengths, pulses down to microseconds can also be captured [21]. By mathematically linking the remission at the surface with the absorption of the investigated fluids, extinction data and the resulting layer thickness distributions can be visualized.…”

“…The work so far has concentrated on the application of film thickness measurements. In addition, reactive processes, where both the fluid concentration and the film thickness distribution changes, are to be measured [21].…”

“…Therefore, near-infrared spectroscopy proves to be a promising measurement technique and has been used to monitor processes [ 15 ] and control the quality of many products, such as biodiesel, by identifying the traces of water and glycerol or water drops in oil [ 16 , 17 ]. Other applications involve measuring film thickness, concentration, or temperature of the water or aqueous solutions [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Glycerol has proven to be an appropriate substance in experiments where viscosity plays an important role and is widely used in scientific and industrial fields, and its use is well suited to the analysis of viscous solutions.…”
