VECMAtk: a scalable verification, validation and uncertainty quantification toolkit for scientific simulations

Abstract: We present the VECMA toolkit (VECMAtk), a flexible software environment for single and multiscale simulations that introduces directly applicable and reusable procedures for verification, validation (V&V), sensitivity analysis (SA) and uncertainty quantication (UQ). It enables users to verify key aspects of their applications, systematically compare and validate the simulation outputs against observational or benchmark data, and run simulations conveniently on any platform from the desktop to current multi… Show more

“…These guidelines only refer to medical devices and pharmacokinetics, thus future efforts are needed to define suitable protocols and methods for wider biomedical applications. The criticality of computational model verification, uncertainty quantification, calibration and validation in the biomedical field is also demonstrated by recent publications (Marino et al, 2008;Luraghi et al, 2018;Nikishova et al, 2018Nikishova et al, , 2019Fleeter et al, 2020;Ye et al, 2021a;Curreli et al, 2021;Groen et al, 2021;Luraghi et al, 2021;Rapadamnaba et al, 2021).…”

“…In addition, approaches combining ABC and GP methodologies have also been considered (see, e.g., Wilkinson (2014), Meeds and Welling (2014)), although the approach we take here differs in that ABC is used to provide initial evaluations and the GP optimization process provides refining. Moreover, toolkits specifically aimed at model exploration on HPC resources exist (see, e.g., Adams et al (2014b), Groen et al (2021)); however, they are not geared toward integrating external, multilanguage libraries or large-scale mixed ML and simulation workflows.…”

“…In more formal terms, we may classify these concerns into validation, verification, sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification (UQ) of a workflow (or workflow instance), with the canonical use of these terms being found in. 103 These terms, and the distinction between them, are found more often in discussions of computational models used in physics and engineering, 104 , 105 but the concepts are relevant to (and may be adapted to) the general scientific workflows covered in this article.…”
