This paper discusses the study of semiotics on the meaning of the sign of Pasola show in Waihura Village Wanokaka District, West Sumba Regency. This study aims at describing how the meaning and form of the sign in the implementation of Pasola show in Wanokaka community. This study was conducted on the basis of Pierce's semiotics theory in Aart (1993). The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The data was obtained from the speech of the performers of Pasola called Rato. Method and technique of data collection were observation and interview. Observation was used to obtain the data of the implementation process and the signs involved in the Pasola show, while the interview was used to obtain the spoken data used and the meaning in Pasola's references. From the results of data analysis it was found that in Pasola show there are twenty marks, such as mamoli (earring), nibbu (spear), profit (drum), katopu (machete), karera (bag), katala (gong), whung, koba (bowl), kalabi (shirt), rowa rara (red sash), rowa metung (black sash), laiku (rope), leli (ring), reba (place to eat), winu (betel nut), rato (Customary ruler), arera (betel nut), lagoru (dribble), rahi dara (horse control), regi (cloth), horse equipments, Pasola player, lado, hela, kadu watu, Rato position. The meaning of these signs is as a symbol of fertility for women, symbolizing splendor. Dragon symbolizes the entry of the holy month that all the restrictions must be followed, symbolizing the unity of society in running the life of society, symbolizing the majesty of a king, the moon gives a hint of the passage of Pasola, the symbol of life Wanokaka society.
The study aimed at finding out the multimodal forms of tourism promotional discourse of promoting hotels in Bali in the age of COVID-19. The theory used in this study is the semiotic theory. In addition, descriptive qualitative is a method used to find forms of advertising, text construction, linguistic aspects, and visual elements of hotel advertisements in the Sanur and Kuta areas in the era of implementing the new normal with researchers as instruments or tools in this study. The data, then, were analyzed inductively. Based on the results of the study, the forms of hotel and tourism advertisements during the implementation of the New Normal were categorized into hotel and tourism audiovisual advertisements and printed hotel and tourism advertisements. Text construction in marketing hotels covers three aspects, namely representational aspects, relational aspects, and textual identity aspects. In addition, the type of semiotic system found in hotel and tourism advertisements during the implementation of the New Normal consists of linguistic aspects, visual forms, and body language. Transcreation of tourism advertisements after the implementation of the new normal consists of verbal, visual, and cultural aspects of advertising.
This study discussed texts and images in Aquaman Movie using a multimodal discourse analysis by Kress and Van Leeuwen's (2006) theory. The objectives of this study are to find out how the texts and images modes are used in the movie and how is the meaning of the text related to the meaning of the image. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this study was taken from Aquaman Movie. The data was collected through downloading, reading the dialogue, watching, screenshotting, selecting and coding the data based on the theory Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). The result found the text and image components are used to know and identify the meaning contained in the Aquaman movie, which aims to provide information to readers and viewers through the modes displayed in the movie. The texts and images mode explain each other’s meaning and show related and non-conflicting meanings so that, can be easily understood by the public. This research is aimed to figure out the syntactic structure of Balinese proverbs, the relation of meaning between the name of the animals and the meaning of the proverbs, and how the meanings are constructed in logical dimension. This research belongs to a qualitative as the data of this research are qualitative data which taken from a book entitled Basita Paribahasa written by Simpen (1993) and a book of Balinese short story written by Sewamara (1977). The analysis shows that the use of concept of animals in Balinese proverbs reveal similar characteristics, whether their form, their nature, and their condition. Moreover, the cognitive processes which happen in resulting the proverb is by conceptualizing the experience which is felt by the body, the nature, and the characteristic which owned by the target with the purpose of describing event or experience by the speech community of Balinese. Analogically, the similarity of characteristic in the form of shape of source domain can be proved visually, while the characteristic of the nature and the condition can be proved through bodily and empirical experiences. Ecolinguistics parameters are used to construct of Balinese proverbs which happen due to cross mapping process. It is caused by the presence of close characteristic or biological characteristic which is owned by the source domain and target domain, especially between Balinese with animal which then are verbally recorded and further patterned in ideological, biological, and sociological dimensions.
Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengatasi permasalahan karyawan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris mereka. Peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris sangat dibutuhkan oleh para karyawan karena mereka biasanya dikunjungi oleh orang asing yang ingin mendapatkan informasi tentang kebijakan tentang pengelolaan pembuangan sampah sebagai salah satu masalah Bali sebagai daerah tujuan wisata. Untuk mengatasi masalah peningkatan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris karyawan, diperlukan metode pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang inovatif dan efektif sehingga dapat meningkatkan bahasa Inggris mereka secara signifikan. Metode pengajaran yang diterapkan dalam melakukan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Metode ini secara fungsional menekankan bagaimana bahasa digunakan, sedangkan secara struktural, CLT menekankan pada sistem atau aturan bahasa. Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Communicative Language Teaching selama delapan kali pertemuan. Setelah mengikuti pelatihan selama delapan kali, hasil pelatihan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris peserta yang awalnya berada pada kisaran 2,55 untuk pretest kemudian meningkat menjadi 4,05 untuk post-test dengan skor kisaran 1-5. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris yang diberikan kepada peserta telah mampu meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka secara signifikan.
