This research aims to discover the accuracy level of Google Translate in English -Bahasa Indonesia translation, especially in translating specialized language in mechanical engineering terms. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The primary source of the data was the output translation texts of Google Translate. The sample texts were sentences taken from the book of the mechanical engineering field. The main concerns were on word and phrase levels. Since there were only two categorizations in accuracy research, the researchers divided the number into two. A text was said to be accurate if the accurate meanings were more than 50%. Conversely, it was inaccurate if the accurate meanings were less than 50%. The results revealed that in English -Bahasa Indonesia translation, Google Translate, especially in translating specialized language in mechanical engineering terms, was accurate for word translation, but inaccurate for phrases. This statement was based on the findings of accurate occurrence percentage in Google Translate translations, which were 70.73 % for the word level and 46.37% for the phrase level. The number for words was above 50 %, but it was the opposite for phrases. The inaccuracy was indicated by four inaccuracy indicators (omission, addition, different meaning and zero meaning). Moreover, several sentences translated by Google Translate were inaccurate. This research unveiled that Google Translate translated the sentences or paragraphs based on the sentence structure from the source text and the general meaning of the words or phrases.
Language acquisition for children is started when they produce words on their own. Children’s language normally develop in line with their age. Usually they can produce sentence and speak their mother tongue language fluently at the age of three. In the same time, children are able to acquire other language which is called second language acquisition (SLA). In Indonesia, English has become second language that has become the main subject at school, from the elementary level to the university level. Toddlers are children at the range of age between 2-3 years. This is the peak time to acquire language, and at this age, children are able to create phrase or simple sentence. Since the technology has developed very rapidly, children also can get more facilities to learn language. One of the media to learn language is YouTube. Using interview method, the writers did interview to 21 respondents as the parents of pre-school students. There were four questions to answer and the answers were described based on the respondents’ opinion. The research results that children can start to learn English through YouTube by watching English songs. Their attraction in watching is followed by imitating the word, the way the characters sing, and also the manner. Parents become guide to improve the children’s process of English learning after they watched YouTube.
Many non-English departments study English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to improve students' vocabulary related to their field. UMY has established a program called MyKlass as a facility to do online learning. This program provides many features, such as sharing materials in the form of documents, pictures, or media; conducting quizzes; assignment submission; and attendance. However, teaching ESP using MyKlass also faces some difficulties such as students' motivation to read the material, the teacher's control in evaluating students' study progress, and students' problem in improving English vocabulary in specialized language. Using a questionnaire distributed to 234 Accounting and Mechanical Engineering students, the writers found out the students' perception of using MyKlass from their motivation and perception in learning ESP using MyKlass, their perception of the aspects of benefits, and their perception of learning ESP Using MyKlass. Most of the answers showed positive responses; therefore, we can conclude that ESP online learning using MyKlass has been very beneficial to the students regardless of the technical problems that students sometimes encounter.
Translation frequently conveys information about culture, knowledge, and other social interactions. It is also considered from the perspective of intercultural communication access to developments in the humanities, sciences, and technologies. It is the fastest, most effective, and most efficient approach to transmitting knowledge and technology. Therefore, it is necessary to apply translation methodologies and techniques to ascertain the translator's translation ideology. The research method used in this research is the qualitative research design. This research took samples of the translation of mechanical engineering terms in Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Heat Transfer to look for techniques, methods, and ideologies used by translators to translate these terms from English into Indonesian. The data obtained were 175, with the discovery of 109 single translation techniques, 50 double translation techniques, and six triplet translation techniques. Three translation methods are applied: the literal translation method, the faithful translation method, and the semantic translation method. From the technical data and translation methods, the researcher concludes that the ideology applied by the translator is the ideology of foreignization.
