Introduction: Tooth extraction can result in loss of alveolar bone. The application of biomaterials Bovine Amniotic Membrane (BAM) that containing growth factors and collagen is expected to play a role in socket preservation. This study aimed to observe the effect of BAM application on the growth of osteoblasts, osteocytes, and collagen in histological preparate of the alveolar bone socket of Sprague Dawley rats (SD). Methods: 16 male SD rats were used in this group. SD rats were extracted on the mandible central incisivus. Afterward, it was divided into two groups, specifically the control group (without treatment) and the treatment group (BAM application). After extraction, the treatment group was applied with BAM with a size of 1.5 mm x 10 mm in socket alveolar bone. On the 14th and 28th day, the rats were euthanized and the alveolar bone socket of mandibular tissue was taken and stained with Hematoxylin Eosin (HE) and Masson Trichrome (MT). Results: The results of all groups showed that the number of osteoblasts and collagen thickness was higher on day 14th compared to day 28th, while osteocytes continued to increase from day 14th to 28th. The thickness of collagen, osteoblasts, and osteocytes in groups with BAM application was higher than without application. Statistical results showed that there were significant differences between groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The application of BAM can act as material preservation socket. This biomaterial can accelerate recovery by increasing collagen thickness, osteoblasts, and osteocytes.

Effect of snail mucus on angiogenesis during wound healing

Background: Angiogenesis is the process through which new blood vessels are formed from existing ones. This process plays an important role in supplying the oxygen and nutrients needed for cellular metabolism and eliminating cell debris during wound healing. Snail mucus can bind to several factors that stimulate angiogenesis, including vascular endothelial growth factor, platelet-derived growth factor, and fibroblast growth factor. The aim of this study is to observe changes in angiogenesis during the healing of wounds topically applied with snail mucus. Methods: Punch biopsy was performed on the back of male Wistar rats to obtain four wounds, and different concentrations of snail mucus were applied to each of these wounds. The animals were sacrificed on days 2, 4, and 7 to observe the extent of angiogenesis during wound healing by microscopy. Results: Two-way ANOVA showed differences in number of blood vessels formed (p = 0.00) and day of observation (p = 0.00) between groups. Post hoc Tukey’s HSD test showed that 24% snail mucus treatment does not significantly affect wound healing (p = 0.488); by contrast, treatment with 48% and 96% snail mucus demonstrated significant effects on angiogenesis (p = 0.01). Spearman’s test showed interactive effects between snail mucus concentration and day of observation on the extent of angiogenesis (p = 0.001, R = 0.946). Conclusion: Topical application of snail mucus gel can increase angiogenesis during wound healing in Wistar rat skin.

The Effectiveness of Turmeric Extract (Curcuma domestica Val.) Against Fibroblast Cells in Socket Post Tooth Extraction

Background. This study is an exploration to assess the potential of turmeric extract in the induction of fibroblast cell proliferation, where fibroblast cells are important cells in the process of repair and healing of wounds (socket wounds after tooth extraction). The antioxidants found in turmeric extract are believed to have potential in the initiation of growth factors which will then initiate the process of fibroblast cell activation, which in turn will play a role in wound healing. Methods. The research design in this study is an experimental study with a post-test-only approach with a control group design. The research subjects in this study were rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain, male sex, age 8-12 weeks, and body weight between 150-250 grams. A total of 30 white rats were grouped into 5 groups. Data analysis was carried out with the help of SPSS 25 software. First, a univariate analysis was performed to present the mean number of fibroblast cells and the standard deviation. Furthermore, an analysis was carried out to assess the difference in the mean number of fibroblast cells between groups using the one-way ANOVA test. Results. The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that there were significant differences between the test groups. Giving 10% and 15% turmeric extract was seen to be more potent in the initiation of the number of fibroblast cells than the treatment group that received povidone-iodine. Conclusion. Turmeric extract (Curcuma domestica Val.) concentration of 15% was the most effective concentration as an effort to increase the number of fibroblast cells after tooth extraction in Wistar rats.
