Impact of MAC parameters on the performance of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol with ACK frame transmission

Abstract: IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control (MAC) specifications support an optional feature of MAC-level acknowledgements and frame retransmissions to ensure reliability in data transmission. In this paper, we propose a generalised analytical model, which is based on a three-dimensional, discrete-time Markov chain, to analyse the performance of the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol with retransmission and MAC-level acknowledgements under unsaturated traffic conditions. The network performance is evaluated in terms of aggreg… Show more

“…For instance, Park et al [6] and Pollin et al [7] presented analytical models for the 802.15.4 MAC based on the bidimensional Markov chain proposed in [14], which has been extensively adopted for modelling the IEEE 802. 11 [7] and Wijetunge et al [16] extended their models to account for unsaturated conditions. Ramachandran et al [8] studied the performance characteristics of 802.15.4 MAC in LR-WPAN under Poisson traffic.…”

“…Therefore, it is important to develop analytical models for 802.15.4 MAC under unsaturated traffic loads. Ling et al , Pollin et al and Wijetunge et al extended their models to account for unsaturated conditions. Ramachandran et al studied the performance characteristics of 802.15.4 MAC in LR‐WPAN under Poisson traffic.…”
