The determination of antioxidants activity and sunblock Sterculia populifolia extract- based cream

Abstract: Sterculia populifolia is commonly used as the ingredient of traditional herb in Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It contains flavonoid which roles as antioxidant. This flavonoid can be sunblock due to the existence of chromophore which commonly gives color to plants. This study aimed to determine the activity of antioxidants and sunblock through the value of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) from Sterculia populifolia extract-based cream and cream preparation extract. This cream was formulated into four … Show more

“…Plants have evolved self-protection mechanisms to avoid damage because, in plants, exposure to sunlight is required for photosynthesis. Bioactive compounds such as phenol have antioxidant properties in plants [7,8]. As a result, phytochemical analysis of plants has become an increasingly important method in plant medicine and drug research [9].…”

“…It means that 100 µL of our cream formulation diluted 5 times in water can neutralize 0.152 µmol of radical in half an hour. Similar research was done with a formulation containing Sterculia populifolia extract as an antioxidant [ 32 ]. Its authors showed that a concentration of 100 µg/mL of this extract can neutralize 50% of radicals in 3 mL of 0.004% (w/w) solution of DPPH, which gives 0.152 µmol.…”

“…According to Khairi et al, Klika Faloak extract indicated as a powerful antioxidant with score for IC 50 16.56 ppm. This powerful antioxidant was caused by the flavonoid and polyphenol compound which contain inside the Klika Faloak [20]. Flavonoids and polyphenols in Klika Faloak extract could prevent damage caused by free radicals in several ways, one of which is destroying free radicals directly [21].…”
