The purpose of this research was to determine the influence of honey supplementation in lactate ringer-egg yolk extender with 0.025% sodium dodecyl sulfate and 2% vitamin E addition (LREYSE) on the quality of Pelung chicken spermatozoa preserved at 5° C for 72 hours.Semen was collected from three Pelung chickens once per day over a course of three days using the dorsal-abdominal massage method. Semen was divided into 5 treatment groups of honey supplementation that are 0% as control (LREYSEH0), 1% (LREYSEH1), 2% (LREYSEH2), 3% (LREYSEH3), and 4% (LREYSEH4). This liquid semen was observed for sperm motility and viability every 12 hours. Complete random designrepeated measurement with 4 replications was used in this study. The results showed the motility and viability of spermatozoa in LREYSEextender with 2% honey supplementation (61.25±1.25% and 71.50±0.74%) was significantly higher (P0.05) than other treatments that are 0% (51.25±1.25% and 61.88±1.36%), 1% (52.50±1.44% and 63.25±1.38%), 3% (51.25±1.25% and 61.63±1.48%), and 4% (50.00±2.04% and 60.63±2.29%) of honey supplementation in extender at 36 hours of storage until the end of the observation at 72 hours of incubation. According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that the 2% honey supplementation in extender is the best treatment to maintain sperm motility and viability for 72 hours of storage.
An experiment was conducted at Kalikesur Farm, Kedung Banteng, Banyumas to investigate the reproductive performance of Saanen dairy goats after PGF2α injection on different body weights. This experiment included twenty female Saanen goats at 2-3 years of age, 2-3 kidding periods, and varying body weights of 30 to 55 kg. All goats were intramuscularly injected by 2 ml PGF2α (LutalyseTM, Pharmacia and Upjohn Company, Pfizer Inc) in a double injection pattern, with 11-day interval to perform estrous synchronization. The variables on reproductive performance such as estrus onset, length of estrus, and intensity of estrus were measured and monitored twice a day at 6-10 am and 3-5 pm. Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were conducted. Results demonstrated that body weight performed strong correlations with estrus intensity (r = 0.66) while the time for the first estrus (onset) has a negative moderate correlation with body weight (r = -0.47), a negative weak correlation was recorded between body weight and length of estrus (r = -0.17). Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the body weight of goats in the estrus synchronization program can be used to be an indicator of reproductive performance, especially in estrus intensity. This can help farmers to predict estrus behavior after PGF2α synchronization.
The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of duck variants and addition of vitamins into muscovy duck semen on fertility and fertile period of duck eggs after artificial insemination. Semen was collected from five muscovy ducks and divided into 3 treatment groups: without vitamin supplementation (A0), supplementation of 400 μg/mL vitamin C (A1), and supplementation of 80 μg/ml vitamin E (A2). Each semen was inseminated into female ducks of Magelang (B1) and Mojosari (B2) variants. Complete Random Design was used with 3x2 factorial. The results showed that vitamins and duck variants had no significant interaction (P0.05) with fertility and fertile period. The duck variant had no effect (P0.05) on fertility and fertile period, while the addition of vitamins significantly affected (P0.01) the fertility and fertile period. The addition of 400 μg/mL vitamin C increased fertility by 22.28±0.20% but reduced the fertile period by 7.8±3.5 days, whereas 80 μg/mL of vitamin E increased fertility by 11.57±2.47% but reduced fertile period by 12.3±0.9 days. It can be concluded that the addition of 400 μg/mL of vitamin C and 80 μg/mL of vitamin E in Muscovy duck semen increased fertility but shortened fertile period of duck eggs after artificial insemination.
